Sony Blu-Ray Burner BWU-500S Bound for Next Month
Coming to increase its coverage on the optical disk drive market, Sony has put together the BWU-500S, an internal, 5.35-inch Blu-ray burner bundled with the CyberLink software suite or available in bulk form. Since desktops have to make use of those many 5.35-inch drive bays, Sony has just revealed that it is almost ready to start selling its newest Blu-ray unit. The product is, as already mentioned, dubbed BWU-500S and can burn both single-layer and dual-layer Blu-ray disks, albeit at different speeds.Of course, the product is backwards compatible with a variety of other optical disk formats as well, DVDs and CDs that is.For those interested in numbers, BD-RE disks are scribed at 2X, while single-layer BD-R are written at 12x and dual-layer BD media at 8x.CD-RW disks can also be scribed, at 24x to be exact, and so can CD-R, at 48x.As for DVDs, DVD-RW media reaches speeds of 6x, whereas DVD+RW and DVD-R/+R DL go as high as 8x and 12x, respectively. As for DVD-R/+R and DVD-RAM, they are written at 16x and 12x, respectively.“The new Blu-ray Disc drive from Sony Optiarc is distinguished by its versatility. The BD writer not only delivers excellent image recording and playback quality, it is also suitable for back-ups and the long-term archiving of large volumes of data,” states the official press release.Sony will start shipping this newcomer sometime next month, either in bulk form or paired with the PowerDVD, PowerDirector and PowerProducer, which are part of the CyberLink software suite.“The BWU-500S organizes personal movie, photo and movie collections, preserves irreplaceable memories for the future and frees up space on your hard disc,” adds the official announcement.Set to be backed up by the two-year warranty, the device will start selling in October at a price that has yet to be disclosed.
