QUESTION: CD has a lot of space on it but only says it allows 80 minutes of songs?

I bought some blank CD's at Office Depot the other day to put songs on.
The CD says it is 700mb and then next to it it says 80 min.
I have 46 minutes of songs but only 27 mb are filled.
Does that mean it will only reach a maximum of 80 minutes? Or can I keep putting songs on the CD until it reaches 700mb?

Ok that makes a lot more sense. A while back I made a CD and it didn't work in my car, but would in the computer.
Since these songs are in Data CD mode, how do I make them able to work in my car as an Audio CD?

There is a difference between using the CD as an audio CD and using it as data storage.
As an audio CD, that you can put into any CD player and play music, it only holds 80 minutes of audio.
As a date storage CD, it holds up to 700 mb. If you put music on there in the form of mp3, obviously you can put much more that 80 minutes of music on it. However, it will only be readable by computer CD-ROM drives and by a few stereos that can read mp3.
Edit: There are a lot of programs you can use that burn audio onto a CD from mp3 or other music files. Apple's free iTunes is what I use - you just make a playlist and burn it onto the CD, very easy. |

CDs can be used for 2 purposes. 1 is to put data onto the disc. If you are just burning MP3s to the disc to be played, then you are worrying about the 700MB of data and don't have to worry about the 80min part.
if you are making an AUDIO CD to play in your car or CD player, then you can only put 80 minutes worth of Audio onto the disc.
MP3s are computer files that take an AUDIO CD and compress the data down really small so you can store them on your computer. When you take MP3s and create and AUDIO CD, Your computer uncompresses the MP3s and burns the larger data onto the CD. |

If you burn it as a "music cd" (so that standard CD players can read it) it holds up to 80 minutes. If you burn it as a "data cd" (for storage or to be read by other computers), you can but up to 700mb on it. The CD has to burn differently if you want it to act like a normal music CD, and burning the songs that way takes up more physical space on the CD. |

It depends on how you're burning your CDs. If you're just making an mp3 CD, then you can fit a ton more songs on there, but if you're making a real CD that you can play in any CD player (as in you're converting them from iTunes file or mp3 to CD file) then the songs take up a lot more space. |
