How many mp3 songs on a cd?

A MP3 cd can store 100+ mp3 songs on a cd disc, an Audio CD only store 60min songs on a cd disc, but you should note, if your cd player don't support mp3, means it can't play the MP3 CD, so you have to burn an Audio CD for the cd player which don't support mp3, else you can burn a MP3 CD. OK you can write 700MB of data onto a CDR, but you CANNOT play 700MB of audio data in MP3 format in a conventional CD player. If you write this data (whatever the bit-rate) as an 'audio CD' you will only get 80minutes on there as the audio CD is governed by the time-line NOT the file-size.
If you compress files on the CD, you can only play them as MP3 format via a PC or DVD player.
As for how many songs will fit (as data), the general 'rule of thumb' I use is that at 128kbps ('normal' MP3 compression) you get approx 1MB per minute.
So the important question is 'Do you want to play the audio in a conventional CD player?' If so you are limited to 80 min's regardless if the bit-rate (otherwise your songs would play at super-speed).

@ silverbullet - I stated 'conventional' CD players (twice), I already acknowledged that DVD players will play MP3 - it doesn't do to assume that CD players can play MP3 which is why I carefully chose my words. DVD players will because the MPEG format is common to DVD and MP3.
No I have never used anything to burn audio CD from a compressed format, there is very little point. However I have burned MP3's to DVD because the capacity (even at 192kbps) is fairly impressive.
As I stated, the important question which is not addressed by the questioner is 'what device will be used to play the audio', up 'til my answer, nobody had addressed the issue of burning MP3 to an 'audio CD' rather than an 'MP3 CD', all answers assumed that the device could read MP3, I believe my answer offered a bit more of a complete answer.
I realise I was a bit cheeky saying 'and the real answer...' I apologise unreservedly for any offense taken.

This all depends upon the length of the song and the size of the file.

E.G.: If you have a 7 MB song, the length of the song will also be about 6: 40 minutes. If you go by this, you can fit 13 songs on your disc.

average song in mp3 format at 192kbs = 5mb

Unless your collection features a lot of live Grateful Dead. Then its 2-3 songs per cd. <wink><wink>

Livewire: Newer cd and dvd players WILL play cd's with songs in mp3 format. I do it all the time in my car and at home. The stereo in my car has an ipod input as well.

I don't have an ipod, so for long road trips, I load up a cd with 6-8 hours of whatever mp3's strike my fancy that day.

You probably tried to do it with Windows Media Player. If you click on "burn audio cd", by default it does that in cd format. Use "burn data cd" instead.
